Rhona Frazin was vice president of resource development, marketing, and communications at Metropolitan Family Services, where she directed all of Metropolitan's institutional advancement programs and served as a member of the organization's senior management team.  Previously, Ms. Frazin headed marketing, communications, and fundraising for The Nature Conservancy and later for The John Marshall Law School.  She has also served as public relations director for The Goodman Theatre and has been the principal of a public relations consulting firm.

Executive Director

Ed Shurna has been a community organizer on Chicago’s West Side, in Baltimore, and in Harvey.  Mr. Shurna also spent10 years at the National Training and Information Center (NTIC) and founded the Interfaith Organizing Project, organizing Chicago’s Near West Side residents to prevent their displacement from new stadium construction and securing $50 million dollars in community reinvestment.  Prior to assuming this position, Mr. Shurna was the Coalition’s director of organizing and training and also served as its acting executive director.

Senior Research Director

Dewayne Matthews was senior advisor to the president of the Education Commission of the States, and has held senior positions at the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.  He also served as the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education’s executive director.  Dr. Matthews has also been a bilingual teacher in rural New Mexico and a policy analyst with the New Mexico Legislature.  His Ph.D. (Arizona State University) dissertation topic was State Policy Influences on Institutions of Higher Education: Promoting Improved Outcomes for Minority Students.

Program Director

David Cournoyer is communications manager for Youth and Education Programs at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.  His work on college access and success issues began during his tenure at the American Indian College Fund and has continued throughout his tenure at Kellogg.

Mr. Cournoyer began his professional life in TV news, working as a correspondent for the Fox News Channel in Denver and reporting for local TV stations in Minneapolis, Florida, and New Mexico.  He is currently on the boards of Native American Public Telecommunications and Native Americans in Philanthropy and is a member of Grantmakers for Education.

Mr. Cournoyer begins his tenure at the foundation on February 23. 

 

George Gund Foundation

Senior Program Officer

Ann Mullin is currently program officer for education at The Cleveland Foundation. Previously, Ms. Mullin was operations director for the Montessori Development Partnerships; her work there included serving as interim director of Old Brooklyn Montessori, one of Cleveland’s first community schools.  Ms. Mullin has taught music and art and early in her career worked for several years in the private sector.  She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Case Western Reserve’s Weatherhead School of Management. 

Ms. Mullin begins her tenure at the Gund Foundation on February 14.
